HYSA Featured Junior Sailors

CONGRATULATIONS to HYSA junior sailors for demonstrating excellence in the sport of sailing.  These junior sailors have been recognized through their dedication in developing their sailing skills, corinthian spirit, perseverance, and leadership through various HYSA regatta series or events, and national or international accomplishments.

At the end of the sailing season, the most exceptional HYSA junior sailor is awarded the HYSA Youth Sailor of the Year Award, the Roy Disney Morning Light Trophy.  Also, during the last race of the season, which has been sponsored by Makani Kai Yacht Club for the last 34 years, MKYC awards the Leadership and Spirit Awards to the sailor that has demonstrated outstanding spirit in the sport of sailing and to a sailor for their leadership skills throughout the HYSA sailing season.  Jump to the bottom of the page for the award descriptions.  Learn more about our junior sailors by clicking on their profile below.

Award Descriptions

HYSA Sailor of the Year

Roy Disney, Morning Light Trophy

Awarded to the Hawaii Youth Sailor of the Year who demonstrates excellence in the sport of sailing both on the water and off.  The candidate should not only exhibit their skills on the water but should have outstanding character and be a role model in the sport.   Demonstration of these traits may be based on participation in the HYRA and HYSA sailing regattas, & clinics, consideration for attending both in-state and out-of-state sailing events, and being a positive role model to fellow athletes as shown by mentoring younger sailors, helping at sailing events and presenting a positive attitude.

Shirley Trefz Spirit Award,

Makani Kai Yacht Club, HYSA Regatta

Shirley Trefez was a charter member of Makani Kai Yacht Club and a member of Hawaii Yacht Club.  She was a strong supporter of the HYSA sailing program.  She built her own El Toro and participated in the KYC Bullship Races.  She was an avid sailor with a strong spirit for the sport of sailing.  MKYC presents the Shirley Trefz Spirit Award to the junior sailor for outstanding spirit in the sport of sailing throughout the HYSA sailing season.

  

Joe McHaney Leadership Award

Makani Kai Yacht Club, HYSA Regatta

Joe McHaney was a Past Commodore of Makani Kai Yacht Club and a Major in the United States Marine Corps. He was an avid sailor who traveled throughout the Hawaiian Islands.  He was an advocate for junior sailing programs in our state.  His leadership skills were evident in all of his endeavors. MKYC presents the Joe McHaney Leadership Award to the junior sailor for their leadership skills in the sport of sailing throughout the HYSA sailing season.
